North versus South, the monumental struggle our nation has endured. The Kepi was a copy of the French officer's hat. The Kepi was shorter than the forage cap, and was not very popular because it did not protect from the rain or sun. Soldiers who wanted to determine the possible line of fire at their trench walls would hold their guns above the trench walls with their hat resting on the muzzle. If a rifle was fired at what appeared to be their heads, soldiers would know it was not safe to move about the trenches. Alex, who is studying the Civil War says that food was kept in the top of the hat. The all suede cap has a leather bill/visor and front strap, centered in the front is a metal pin of crossed rifles.
