| Nice, But Some Problems... (4/5) | Aug 7, 2011 | William | ||
| There seem to be several manufacturers of this type of helmet at large, and they all seem to be working off the same general mold. Overall, the construction of this one is satisfactory. I gave this helmet as a gift to a friend and he will likely put it on a shelf in his study as a conversation piece, but it is wearable. However, there seems to be an overall sizing issue. True, heads were probably smaller during the Victorian Era, and they are possibly smaller where this reproduction is made... Asia, I assume. So the sizing standards are probably a little off. And if you look at old photos, these helmets seemed to fit rather close to the head. That said, the only real way to get a 7 1/4 size or above head into one of these helmets is to remove the inside band/pad and start over. It is so thick that it takes up probably a half size on the inside, making the helmet feel tight and a bit cramped. There is no way a 7 1/2 or 7 3/8 head is going to fit comfortably inside this helmet without clipping or adjusting the inside band. The traditional puggaree or folded tropical outside band has four folds instead of seven, but this varies with the manufacturer, although seven is more common. The helmet is a light khaki, a couple of shades under white, so for yard or weekend work, I would buy the khaki, as the white version would soil quickly and does not use a wrapped outside band, but rather a single, straight white band. | ||||
