'Tis a Foin Hat (4/5) Feb 11, 2008 Rod Beumont
I was able to find a green one in town and can attest that the sizes run small. I normally take a 7 1/2, but ended up with a 7 5/8.

Nice hat, though, and the perfect shade of green for St. Paddy's Day.
dapper dude sports derby (5/5) Dec 30, 2007 Rosemary Rauh Lincroft NJ US
In November, my l7 year old son spotted a man at Newark Airport wearing a derby. My son loved the hat, so I asked the man where he got it and tucked away the information. On Christmas morning, my son opened a bright, shiny box that contained a Golden Gate Derby in red. It was such a hit. He wore a sports coat and tie that day, which in itself was a gift to me. When he made Christmas visits to his friends, he wore his new hat. It just suits his personality. The derby is well-made, vivid in color, and a conversation starter. Your company has such a wide and varied selection. Doing business with you was a pleasure and I anticipate purchasing other "lids" very soon. Good luck and much success in the New Year.

style baby (5/5) Jan 20, 2008 Dana C Carr canton tx US
My son has wanted one of these hats for 3 years. He has been wearing one of those new year's dollar store hats. When I gave him this for Christmas, he showed me a smile and sincere thanks I hadn't seen since before the dreaded teenage disease set in. Thank you village hat for your quick turnaround and immediate emails as the sizes run about 2 sizes too small and I had a successful return.
Golden Gate Derby In Colors (5/5) Mar 9, 2008 Autumn Sandeen San Diego CA US
Size ran slightly small -- I'd consider adding 1/8 an inch to one's normal hat size when one orders. I'm actually between sizes, and some of my larger hat sizing is due to my full-bodied, curly hair, so even though the hat was a little tighter than most hats of the same size, it still fit me adequately. If I were the Village Hat Shop though, I'd add a comment to the description regarding that slightly smaller sizing. That said, the hat itself was wonderful. I love that it came in crystal (gray), and I love that it came in larger sizes. I'm really pleased with the quality and color.
Worth Every Penny (5/5) Jul 19, 2008 Joshua M Malden MA US
I absolutely love the hat, my only gripe at all comes from another reviewer who suggested an extra 1/8 of an inch, which I disagree with. I ended up buying the largest size on their word and honestly the extra room does not make the hat comfortable, just loose.

Otherwise this is a superb hat, sturdy and an absolute pleasure to wear.
Possibly the Nicest Derby for Your Money (5/5) Aug 6, 2008 Joseph Wohl Essex Co US
I'm not sure about others, but I personally don't see the need for a super, high-quality fur-felt derby that costs hundreds of dollars. For some styles though, there unfortunately isn't a mid-range choice in quality/price and you're stuck with either something super cheap or way out of your price range. Fortunately, Golden Gate offers these derbys at a very reasonable price and yet very little is sacrificed in the way of quality. You get a nice, sharp looking wool felt hat (who needs fur?) which is fully lined and in exact sizes. Regarding the sizing, I agree with most of the other reviewers when they say the sizes run small. I'm a size 7 usually, but because of what the reviewers said, I decided to go with the 7 1/8 and I'm glad I did, anything smaller would not have fit(the 7 1/8 is almost perfect). So definitely get at least one size larger than you normally wear. As the design of the hat is rigid, there isn't much room for stretching or shape conforming, so too small is a lost cause. Also, I think potential buyers should know that the actual hat looks a bit different compared to the photo. With mine (the grey hat), the color was significantly darker (somewhere between the grey and black in the photos) and the brim was a bit more curled up on the sides toward the crown (which is actually a good thing, you just don't get that impression from looking at the photos except for maybe the Navy hat). Still, these minor issues are not even enough for me to knock a star off of my rating, and I was about as pleased with the order process as I am with the product itself. If you want a derby hat as I did for no particular reason but to wear around here and there and on special "dress-up-and-feel-cool" occasions this is probably your best option. It has the proper styling/dimensions, has a lot of the features and quality of higher-end versions (hurray for "made in USA"), and perhaps most importantly of all, after purchasing, there won't be a huge 200+$ gap in your wallet nor the regret that soon follows.
