It worked for me (5/5) Dec 5, 2007 Jim Weil Fremont Ca US
I wanted to take my wife, who has limited time off at this time of year, on a safari for our anniversary, so I decided to take here to Safari West, near Calistoga, about a 75 miles from where we live. So that we would look the part, I got us some khaki clothes, but could not locate pith helmets anywhere locally. So I found VillageHatShop via a Google search on 'pithhelmet.' Since there were so many choices I gave them a call to see what would be most appropriate. The agent that I talked to was extremely helpful, courteous and pleasant. She took the time to answer all my questions and suggest the best and least expensive shipping option that would meet our schedule and insure we would have them before we left. I placed the order and the hats arrived without issue, and at the right time. They were exactly as described. We wore them during our entire trip and found them to be well made, very comfortable and light and extremely realistic. We received a number of complements from both visitors and staff of Safari West which was a great experience. Since my wife had no idea where she was going or what was in the 'box' before we got there, I had to trust VilliageHatShop for sizing info which proved to be absolutely correct. Now that the trip is over, we plan to use the hats for gardening as they seem to be very durable, lightweight and offer good sun protection. This was my first order with VillageHatShop. Given their helpfulness, timeliness pricint and attitude of their staff, I would strongly recommend them to anyone considering hat purchases and will consider them again as a first choice for any future hat purchases myself.
Pith helmets Rule! (5/5) Dec 28, 2007 matt Kaplinski Flagstaff Az US
I field-tested this hat on several river trips in Grand Canyon this summer and for the desert heat, it can't be beat.

Pluses: Great shade - especially in the wind. Other brims blow up or down over your face, which is super annoying, but not the Pith Helmet!
Evaporative cooling when wet - nice! Its also great in the rain and pretty tough.

Minuses: The pith can get kind of soft when wet for long periods. When soft, it can get squished and lose its shape and structure. It whistles a bit when breezy - a good tradeoff for the evap. cooling. The leather strap looks cool, but you'll want to attach a better strap.

All in all, its a must-have for me from now on.

Fantastic value, purchased this helmet as a gift for my Father to replace a worn out cheaper version. He is very pleased.

Great hat!! I do a lot of out door photography and needed a hat that could keep me cool, shade me, and my camera. The pith helmet performed beautifully on all counts!
Brilliant! (5/5) Apr 13, 2008 Desert Walker Ne US
This is an elegant as well as functional hat. I bought it in white. It works superbly for desert heat, which is where I wear it on my daily long walk. The only thing bad about this hat is that it is not suitable for wearing in very windy conditions [20 mph+]. The wind makes a lot of noise going around the pith helmet and it is not a comfortable hat when it is being hit by a lot of wind. Otherwise I recommend it wholeheartedly for deserts.
Outstanding Product (5/5) Apr 16, 2008 Johnny Irvin Round Rock Te US
I spend a lot of time out doors here in central Texas and the sun here is intense and damaging. This is a great hat/helmet for Geogaching as it provides excellent protection from sun and rain. It also provides protection for your head when rambling through dense brush looking for geocaches. I also use it for kayaking for the great sun protection and dipping it occasionally will prodive good cooling. I would highly recommend this hat/helmet as it is well made and should last for years to come. It was everything "The Village Hat Shop" said it would be, Thanks for a great product!
Functional (5/5) Apr 25, 2008 Ky Quoc Le Wichita Ka US
The reason I got this hat was because I bicycle and do some gardening. It is good for bicycling because the wind can cause flimsy hats to flop around, the pith helmet is always in it's original shape. When it is really windy you have to adjust your head down for aerodynamics, so the chin straps won't be too stressed and so the wind won't slow you down.

I love this hat! It is great for long walks, hiking or boating, which is what I mostly plan on using mine for. It is lightweight, yet very sturdy, and stays on my head on those windy days.

I got this for my wife - she recently started playing golf and was worried about her precious noodle (a concern I share). The French Pith Helmet meets and even exceeds her needs. It's comfortable, stylish, and keeps out both rain and sun. And it should provide good protection against most flying objects. We hope not to put it to this test, however. It never fails, every time she hits the course someone else asks her where she got it. We may be seeing more of these bobbing around the worlds' greens in the future.

This hat is great. I use it for shade while working in the yard. It is light and provides lots of shade. It is also strong and provides some protection when working under trees and shrubs.
