Wolseley Pith Helmet (4/5) Jul 28, 2008 David U Baltimore MD US
This helmet is truly an attention-getter, but still functional. Unfortunately here in the Mid-Atlantic it is both hot AND humid so wetting the helmet with water (as practiced in the more hostile desert environment) doesn't do much for evaporative cooling. Nevertheless, it does keep the burning sun off my head and on a breezy day it works quite well.
I'm so "pithed" but that's a good thing! (4/5) Oct 11, 2009 Safari Dude SE US
Ever since I was a little kid and saw on TV those Johnny Weissmuller 1930s Tarzan films with the British explorers hacking through the jungle in their pith helmets, I had to have one. That search started when I began my safari phase in the mid-60s, but by then, genuine pith helmets were long gone and could not be found even through specialty outfitters. So I settled on one from a so-called "army surplus" store that was anything but and made of molded plastic with a huge crown and 3-inch brim that looked like a lampshade on my then-6 3/4-size head. Many years later, the straw piths came into being, but they were still a far cry from the real McCoy. So, imagine my delight when I found, 40 years later, all the authentic pith helmet iterations right here: French, Indian, British military, Vietnamese military, gendarme, and for me the piece de resistance--the Wolseley! Thank you VHS! I had to dock the helmet one star for a couple of minor quality issue, which VHS kindly informs you of up front.

I'll be the first to admit that I've never really needed a pith helmet, but I'm glad I have one now. it is a little warm, but no more so than a tightly woven straw hat and still a positive relief when compared to full sun. I don't imagine cork can be beat when it comes to spf.

This hat not only helps my husband in his fight against skin cancer, but catches the eyes of all who see him. If we had VillageHatShop.com cards, we could possibly increase your business, because quite a few people admire the hat and want to know where to get one. My only problem is that he looks so GORGEOUS in this hat I have to keep a close eye on all the wahines when he goes walking!

I purchased 5 of these hats for a production of Secret Garden. They are exactly what I wanted - they look just like the ones in a photo of British Indian officers from the early 1900's.
Thank you so much for the quality and affordability.

Received my helmet today, and pleasantly suprised with both the quality and fit, and the fact it fits my large head so well. It looks quintessentially the part for the classic image of the Victorian gentleman hunter at the height of the empire, for one of it's future uses. i'm looking forward to test driving it's full potentail overseas in the coming year.

I bought this helmet for kayaking in Florida. It is awesome for the hot and humid inland rivers. I pour water into the helmet and it seems to provide some cooling and it looks really sharp. I am thinking of buying a differant style just for variety

I bought this in hopes of getting a hat that will provide some comfort and sun protection from the Texas sun and heat. I couldn't be more satisfied. For the first time I have a hat that is not soaking wet 20 minutes after I go outside. Plus a hat that holds it's shape. I am most pleased, though the hat does generate some odd comments. This hat and the excelent service I received from the company has made me a repeat customer.
