| Lots of personality (5/5) | Aug 10, 2011 | Paul David Rivadue | Wantagh NY US | |
| Excellent protective hat to wear while fishing and reading and boat watching down at the bay. The leather strap could be sturdier, but the hat is a good sun guard that is also quite suggestive of other cultures and earlier times. | ||||
| perfect for the desert gardener (5/5) | Jul 26, 2011 | John P. | Phoenix AZ US | |
| Well worth the price, I plan on wearing this for fall and winter hikes. I live in Phoenix where surface temperatures reach 144 at mid day in the summer. I wear this helmet to protect my head from the sun as well as low hanging tree branches in my yard. Wind gusts do not lift this helmet off my head like all other big hats I have owned. My head size is 7 5/8, right on the cusp of a regular and a big-head, and I am glad I went with the big-head version. I replaced the cheapo string at the center where the suspension straps meet with a small strip of raw hide string, and placed additional strips of velcro on the adjustment straps for a perfect fit. With these minor tweaks, I now have a very nice looking great fitting authentic pith helmet. My mail carrier wears the straw version featured on this site, and after showing off my helmet to her, I wouldn't be surprised if she soon upgrades to pith. | ||||

I bought this French Pith Big Head primarily for function while working and recreating in the hot sun, and secondly for fun of wearing it. CONS - I just got it and worn it about 10 minutes when one of the four cotton suspension straps inside the crown tore. Easy fix with glue or needle/thread, but still....Also, my Big Head version is oversized, even for my 7 3/8+ head. I put the adjustable headband on its tightest setting, and it is just barely tight enough, and probably not tight enough for windy days. The chin strap is flimsy, and I'll probably replace it with something in soft nylon and modern buckle system. PROS - It's very lightweight and comfortable when wearing it inside. I haven't worn outside yet. The price is reasonable, but I'd pay 10 bucks more for better quality control in the suspension and strap system. Perhaps you guys can consider making a "Professional" or "Working Man's" version for a little higher price, which has an upgraded suspension and chin strap system. |

The pith is as interesting a hat as it is practical. Not only does it keep the sun off of your face and neck, but because the helmet doesn't sit directly on the head (there are little straps that support it on your scalp) it allows for good amounts of air circulation, making it a perfect hat for the summer. Plus, it's a lovely conversation starter, and people will come to recognize you as "that pith helmet guy." Also makes a great costume piece. If you got a larger than average head, become a dark lord of the Pith today. My only complaint is the chinstrap when damaged has the top layer flake off to reveal a bright pink beneath it. Easily fixed with brown sharpie, though. My hat's been accidentally crushed twice, but the dome still holds its shape perfectly (though with a noticeable fault line down the back!). |

| UK Order (5/5) | Feb 23, 2010 | C Ellis | Maidstone Ke UK | |
| I was very impressed with the Villagehatshop website although slightly nervous about ordering, as I am in the UK...and with the postage added on, I was concerned that the item may not have been value for money. However I found the service excellent, efficient and friendly. The hat has lived up to my expectations and is fabulous. I can't wait for some sunny weather! | ||||

I bought this hat as a costume, and it was outstanding! It is very high quality, and it was the hit of the party! It completely made the costume. |

| Great Structure, Poor Details (4/5) | May 17, 2009 | V. Krivitski | Hamilton NY US | |
| The pith of the helmet is very well constructed, but the strap and suspension system is pretty cheap. A quick couple stitches will save the suspension and a little superglue on the "rivet" keeps it in place. Not so stoked about the rest of the metal pieces on the strap, they're a very flimsy alloy. In any sort of high wind I'm sure they'd break, but some new ones could definitely be jury rigged with a paperclip or two. I generally wear a hat size 7 5/8, this was actually a little too big (velcro is about bottomed out) but affords extra ventilation. Great sun protection, soaks well and retains form even after repeated knocks, etc. Good call if you have some glue and thread on hand. | ||||

I bought the Pitch Helmet to keep the Hot Louisiana Sun off my head and the Hat does the trick. I was disapointed in the slapdash construction of the hat; the top center point is out of line and the chin strap and lining is cheap. Otherwise, the Helmet will serve it's purpose. |
