I have to rate this hat a 3, because I have made modifications, and I'm still not sure I can dip it in water without damage to the materials of construction. In water, the cotton cover and lining will absorb 4 times its weight in water. The resullt is that the hat band and cotton veneer will increas in length, possibliy causing the adhesive to come undone. Properties of the core material is still largely unknown to myself. I spent the retail price and pad shipping. My modification was to coat the top surface, brim, and underside of brim with clear epoxy to stabilize the design. As a result, it gets hot in summer sunlight. I continue to explore the benefits of this hat, because it has a wide, downsloping brim. I would also like the Vietnamese manufacturer to offer those cone hats in the traditional materials and construction with a chin strap. |

| Approximately three weeks ago I bought this helmet for yard work. I've worn faux pith helmets for years for the same purpose. This one is the best looking and the lightest. However, already it's given me the most grief. The chin strap is purely decorative. Don;t even think about using it for anything else. I fabricated my own from poly cord. Had to punch holes, one on each side, in the green plastic inner support structure. works fine. That inner support does not keep hat off top of head out of the box. Now, however, it does. Yesterday, one of the four inner straps became unsewn from around the center string. Before resewing it I cut out the overly large string loop; ended up resewing three of the four straps and using nylon cord to replace the cotton string loop with a smaller diameter to pull the straps tighter for improved ventilation. Other than that, the hat seems ok. Out of the box, it's ready to go as a Halloween costume. Anything tougher...careful. | ||||
