They are handmade one piece at a time. This helmet, like all other pith helmets we carry, is incredible lightweight as the 4-ply wood interior has a low density (similar to balsa wood). This and our other pith helmets can be immersed in water to keep the wearer cool during hot weather. (Please submerge the outside of the helmet carefully, without allowing water to spill into the interior of the helmet.) Featuring a dark khaki cotton twill with a stylish cream pleated hat band, the African Safari Pith Helmet is ready for adventure! Please Note: Pith helmets can be immersed in water, whereby the wearer stays cool during use on hot summer days. These hats are made from the cork, or pith, of trees from northern Vietnam using techniques developed 100 years ago by the French during their occupation. By popular demand, we have introduced this Indian style pith helmet in a size range for people with bigger heads.
