Its rain and mildew resistant, 10-oz. cotton duck is the best of its type; the grommets are solid British brass. The Tilley hat is "nearly indestructible", fully washable (they recommend using the dishwasher), and it floats! It is a very comfortable fitting hat. THE TILLEY HAT IS DESIGNED TO BE WORN LOW ON YOUR HEAD AND SLIGHTLY LOOSE. IT SHOULD BE HELD ON BY GRAVITY, NOT BY PAINFUL PRESSURE ON YOUR FOREHEAD. TILLEY SUGGESTS THAT YOU PURCHASE THE HAT ONE SIZE LARGER THAN YOUR REGULAR HAT SIZE. When it's windy, use the wind cord. When security is a consideration, there's a secret pocket.
AMC CERTIFIES TILLEY HATSApril, 2001-Toronto Tilley Hats received official certification for providing excellent ultraviolet protection by the AMC Cancer Research Center. The AMC certified that all Tilley Hats block 98 percent of the harmful UVA/UVB rays and deliver an Ultraviolet Protection Factor of 50+, the maximum rating given. The sun certification rating from AMC--an independent, not-for-profit institution--covers the T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 Tilley Hats made from 10-ounce cotton duck, and the lighter weight LT3 and LT5 made from Supplex nylon. As a result of this testing, Tilley Endurables has joined the American Sun Protection Association, a not-for-profit organization of manufacturers, importers and distributors of sun-protection products.
