Pillbox Hats

Though many similar hat styles have surfaced throughout the ages, the modern women's Pillbox Hat was a product of the 1930s. Its brimless design offered a minimalist elegance that earned the style much popularity. However, it wasn't until U.S. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy sported a Pillbox Hat to her husband's inauguration in 1961, that the style gained domestic and international renown. Mrs. Kennedy highly favored the style and even famously wore a matching pink skirt suit and Pillbox Hat the day President Kennedy was shot.

Named after the similarly shaped containers in which prescription pills were kept, Pillbox Hats typically feature a shallow and brimless cylindrical crown with straight sides. The style is most often minimalist in design, although trims including a veil, feathers, bows, and/or jewels are also common. Pillbox Hats are often worn angled to the back or either side of the head, usually secured via an attached hair comb/pin or thin band that may be easily hidden in one's hair. Its ease of wear, lightweight nature, and plethora of materials and available trims, have made the Pillbox an enduring and elegant hat style still very much in vogue today.
