Bickmore

In 1882, seeing a need for an effective workhorse gall cure in the local logging industry, Mr. Abiel Parker Bickmore and his wife formulated an ointment later known as Bickmore's Gall Cure out of their own Old Town, Maine kitchen. This ointment was so effective, it quickly gained popularity across the logging industry and beyond. Following their formal incorporation in 1892 as The Bickmore Company, the slogan "Be Sure and Work the Horse" was adopted together with the image of a local dapple gray workhorse known as "Doctor" or "Old Doc." Doctor was well-known around town as one of the most intelligent and strongest horses in the area. Today, Doctor's image is still featured across Bickmore products and graces the entrance of Bickmore Manor, Bickmore's original office and manufacturing facility still located on South Main Street in Old Town.

Originally advertised across the nation using only two horse-drawn wagons, Bickmore's popularity swiftly grew, prompting an expansion to non-equine care products. By 1910, the advertising team had grown to nine wagons and demand for Bickmore products had spread outside of the US. Today, US-sold Bickmore products are still proudly made (mostly by hand) in the USA with additional manufacturing facilities in Canada and France as well as international offices in over 10 countries.
