Gambler Hats

Named after patrons of casino riverboats that traveled up and down the Mississippi River during the 1800s, Gambler Hats offer a distinctive design inextricably associated with the American West and its Frontier spirit. It is believed this style stemmed from Mexican charros (cowboys) who brought them to the Southwest and/or "Planter" Hats worn by wealthy Southern landowners. Gambler Hats traditionally feature a telescope crown and wide, flat brim with curled edge. The style of its trim can vary and is dependent on its overall design - either Classic/Dress or Western/Cowboy. For the former, often a grosgrain ribbon or pleated hat band and perhaps a side pin complete the look. For Western/Cowboy-bent designs, Gambler Hats are often trimmed with leather hat bands, often featuring concho, stud, bead, and/or feather accents.
