Viking Helmets

Despite the evidence suggesting Vikings did not, in fact, wear horned helmets, the stereotype has become so legendary it is hard to shake. As of yet, archaeologists have not discovered any Viking-era helmets with horns. (Previous horned helmets found by archaeologists actually predated the Vikings.) The only complete helmet from the Viking era, dubbed the "Gjermundbu Helmet" after the Norwegian farm on which it was found, lacks horns but does feature guards around the eyes and nose. This helmet comprises part of the permanent Viking Age Exhibition at the University of Oslo Historical Museum in Norway.

The origins of the myth most likely stem from the 1876 Der Ring des Nibelungen opera cycle by Richard Wagner. Costumes for the popular opera designed by Carl Emil Doepler featured horned helmets for Viking characters, giving rise to the pervasive and enduring stereotype.

Whether you adhere to the stereotype or not, the Village Hat Shop offers a variety of Viking-style helmets - with and without horns - ideal for cosplay and costumes, sports fans, and anything in between. Our exclusive Village Hat Shop brand features genuine steel Viking Helmets handcrafted by artisans in Mexico (with horned versions featuring genuine bull horns).
