Turbans at Village Hat Shop
The Turban has a storied history that spans millennia as well as cultures. Although their origins are a bit murky, there is evidence of turban-like garments being worn as early as 2350 BCE via a surviving royal Mesopotamian sculpture from the era. Originally worn across the ancient world including India, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and some parts of Europe, Turbans were worn at differing times by followers of all major religions - Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Sikhism.
Depending on the culture and time period, Turbans were sometimes only allowed to be worn by those belonging to a certain class or religion. For example, in India only the royalty and high officials were allowed to wear Turbans which due to their status symbolism were often highly ornamented and decorated with peacock plumes. Under Mughal rule, however, the Turban was later used to segregate this same population on basis the of religion with only the Islamic ruling class being permitted to wear the style. Today, Turbans are still very much in use as part of both cultural and religious daily attire across the world.
The Turbans' use in women's fashion, on the other hand, has ebbed and flowed with time. Evidence of its use by European women goes back to the end of the 17th century, although its use as a fashion statement per se can be attributed to Queen Marie Antoinette of France during the late 18th century. Known to be a trendsetter, Marie Antoinette often wore turbans adorned with flowers, exotic feathers, and precious stones. Then in the early 20th century, the Turban again experienced a fashion renaissance after costumes for the ballet Scheherazade popularized the style in Paris and beyond. Since then, Turbans have become a recurring fashion - worn by the likes of Greta Garbo, Grace Kelly, Vivien Leigh, Barbara Streisand, Lucille Ball, Elizabeth Taylor, and Sophia Loren to name a few.
