The Greek Fisherman/Fiddler Cap
Share
Greek fisherman caps have a recognizable silhouette complete with soft crown, structured band, and rounded bill. Traditionally available in black or navy blue wool, this style can now be found in all colors and made with cotton, denim, leather, etc. In general, traditional Greek fisherman caps will feature a twisted cord band across its front secured between two nautically themed side buttons. Usually, embroidered ribbon is present along its brim's edge. Fiddler caps, on the other hand, share the same overall silhouette but do not usually include the cord, button, or embroidered ribbon trimmings.
As with many other iconic hat styles, popular media and culture were heavily involved in the dissemination and popularity of the Greek fisherman and fiddler cap styles. First, Marlon Brando popularized a similar style in "The Wild One" (1953), followed by John Lennon of the Beatles in the 1960s at the peak of Beatlemania. Later, the film adaptation of Fiddler on the Roof in 1971 and the cap's adoption by members of the Black Panthers during the same period helped the style resurge. Since then, these caps have expanded beyond their seafaring origins and can now be seen on or off the water on celebrities and workers alike.
