Every Season is Hat Season
Hats, like other elements of fashion, are subject to seasons and are similarly split into two major categories – Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. As with clothing, Spring and Summer hats consist of lighter weight materials including cotton, linen, other breathable fabrics, and straw. Colors and patterns for Spring and Summer trend toward lighter and brighter hues. Fall and Winter hats, on the other hand, are generally made with heavier and warmer materials such as felt (wool, fur, or other), tweeds, and knits. Unlike the Spring/Summer season, Fall and Winter hat colors and patterns trend toward darker and cozier hues.
With all this in mind, straw and lightweight fabric hats are typically worn in Spring and Summer while felt and heavier fabric hats are typically worn during Fall and Winter.
Of course, this general rule of thumb is subject to weather, time of day, and personal taste. Fall and Winter hats will serve you best in colder climates while Spring and Summer hats will serve you best in warm weather, no matter which season the calendar stipulates. Likewise, warmer hats will work best on cool mornings and evenings even if a lightweight straw hat is most comfortable at noon that same day. As with any general principle, judgement should always be exercised.
