I purchased this wide-brim Guatemalan Palm “Gus” hat shortly after returning from a trip to Mexico. It is well-made, stylish in its own way (it has a VERY wide brim, which may not fit every occasion), and surely provides as much sun protection/shade as anything you will find. It is certainly unique, but quite cool (literally too). I also want to mention the great customer service I received. I initially ordered a bit too large, and an exchange was made very easy.

This is a massive hat! There is no way the sun will get onto my face or neck. I have had a couple melanoma surgeries on my neck so I bought the hat to keep the sun off my face area. The hat is very well made. It is quite large so I don’t think it will work when I travel.

Quality Hat, but can't return

This is a high quality hat. Huge brim gives great sun protection. Extremely sturdy and well made. Unfortunately, I ordered a size that was way too big. Not any fault of the vendor, but the box was so big all shipping options to return it cost more than the hat (over $60). Sharing this to help others be aware that returning maybe impractical.

As a multiple carcinoma survivor, I will never remain indoors, and am now free to be outside in the Carolinas and Florida, fully protected in the critical head and shoulders area. The Gus hat is really great. If you decide to wet the hat and turn the brims down, just water the brims! This thing soaks up a ton of water! It shrinks when by about 4 hat sizes. It expands back when dry so don’t freak out. Gets floppy in high humidity.

River Tubing

This kept me burn free on a 5 hour river tubing extravaganza (sunscreen helped too lol).

The chin strap made it so I didn't worry about if flying off in high winds, and it did get a little wet on the river but mostly maintained it's shape.

I never buy hats because I wear the largest size (8). This was the first hat that I've owned that fit well and did exactly what it was supposed to do.

Excellent hat overall. I bought this for a trip to the islands as I can burn easily. The only issue is that the hat is to big for my head. Soaking in water helped to shape the brim but otherwise still to big. Not sure of a solution other than maybe getting an added sweatband to try to insert. Does Village sell these? Any other suggestions?

Very well made, needs to be stretched and worn so the perfectly round shape conforms to most people's front-to-rear oval head shape. Cheapo fabric hat band that comes with it will not stay in place. Will provide great shade from the Sun for my skin-cancer-prone complexion while mowing without having to slather-on all that pore-blocking sunscreen.

I have done a lot of fishing down in Mexico where the temperatures get to over 100 degrees and the sun is relentless. I use to use the straw lifeguard style hats, I wanted something nicer, not as scratchy, and a wider brim to throw more shade on my shoulders. This hat is pure quality. The palm style is so supple yet keeps its shape. It will last a long time, and honestly I will buy it again when that time comes. Worth every penny.

This is a great hat, and I've owned several over the years. Once one begins to wear out, I order another. The most recent I received was much larger than the previous hat I received, even though both are marked as a size 8. This is not the end of the world. I am comfortable reshaping the hat with hot water. Important to realize there is a good deal of variation though.

I waited, next day got an email saying they had shipped the same hat? shipped the correct size after all, love the hat. no hat band like the picture. payed for return shipping was about 1/3 of the price of the hat!!

Wide Brim Hat

Good construction. Built as advertised. However, the alignment of the formed brim is crooked with the top of the hat. Does not fit completely square on your head as the brim points out of alignment at the front. But it's an outside yard-work hat....so I'm not putting on a fashion show or anything. The tie string is very good quality, but it too sits crooked, so on one side the string is in front of one ear, and behind on the other. I guess I can live with it. Obviously someone missed this entirely on the QC inspection.....if there really was one. Solid straw material. This should last me a long time. Great sunshield!

Sturdy hay

This hat keeps the sun off my face, neck, and shoulders when I am in the garden or just walking in the blazing Colorado sun. It is a wide brimmed hat and very sturdy. I like it very much. I ordered a 6 7/8 which fits snug, but that is ok because it doesn't blow off in the wind and is still comfortable. If you are more fashion conscious you might want to order a 5 inch brim.

Perfect mowing hat

I love this hat. Perfect for mowing garden work tractor work or anything on the sun. Don't let the six inch brim fool you. I didn't think it would be wide enough it is PLENTY wide. If you are looking for something sombrero sized but western styled then this is the hat for you. Very well constructed. I do not know about durability yet. It is a little small for the size. I would order it 1/8th larger than you need

I was recently put on a medication that mad me UV sensitive. I began looking for a hat that would provide shade down past the neckline. This hat did it! Now I'm able to resume my normal outdoor activities like grilling, yard work, etc. And it doesn't look tacky...as a matter of fact I've gotten quite a few compliments on it!

...And well made. Unfortunately this large brim hat does not look good on a tall thin guy like me. It seems to make the extremes more notable. Nevertheless my neighbors will see the rhyme and reason of it when they see me working out in the yard wearing the hat. But I'm gonna wait till I'm bulked up in winter clothes to wear it.

Overall, I am happy with this hat, and I received a compliment the first time I wore it. Hat fits perfectly, however, I did notice some flaws in the weaving process that hopefully won't turn into an unraveling problem later, but not a significant enough issue to return it at this time.

When I ordered this hat, I knew it would be larger than some of the other choices on the site, but I had no idea what I was getting myself into. This thing came out of the box looking like a sombrero. When I first put it on, I had trouble walking through doors. Eventually I found out that with a little water and some patience, you can reshape the hat to your personal tastes. I gave it a little curl on either side which made navigating doorways significantly easier. I love the look of the hat, and being from CT, it's pretty much a guarantee that nobody around here has seen anything like it. It's the last hat I'll ever buy for working/playing out in the sun. Here's to summer!

This Gus 6"" brim hat is cool and casts a large shade. I started wearing one because my medicine made me very sensitive to the sun. This hat allows me to get out more.
